The Ministry of Defence will take advantage of the next takeover of Spanish troops in Afghanistan, to reduce the number of stationed troops by 10%.
This is the start of a process which all the Spanish troops will be out of Afghanistan in 2014.
1,521 military personnel have been allowed to be in Afghanistan, and that number is now down to 1,370, in their majority from the Aero Transport Light Brigade (Brilat) which is based in Galicia and Asturias.
The Brilat will replace the Parachute Brigade (Bripac) which been almost six months in the area with six flights programmed from October 27 to November 21.
In principle the Ministry for Defence plan is for 40% of Spanish troops to be brought back in 2013, and rest in 2014.
However the Defence Minister, Pedro Morenés, admitted last week in Brussels that the retirement could be brought forward substantially so the majority of troops could be back home next year
